Pulmonary Lab Values: Crisis Clues!

Abstract:

An exciting case based session this presentation focuses on labs that are utilized when assessing patients with pulmonary alterations. Key content will include: brain natriuretic peptide - BNP to differentiate heart failure from pulmonary disease; ABG interpretation and the causes and nursing and collaborative interventions for respiratory and metabolic acid-base disturbances; what hemoglobin and hematocrit levels reveal about pulmonary dysfunctions; the rare but devastating methemoglobinemia, and the use D-Dimer for identifying pulmonary embolism. Participants should bring a basic knowledge of normal lab values and a desire to really understand the why behind labs that indicate pulmonary dysfunctions. 

 

Objectives: 

Differentiate nursing management of respiratory acidosis/alkalosis and metabolic acidosis/alkalosis

Discuss laboratory values that indicate pulmonary dysfunction

 

Format and method on instruction:

60 minutes expandable to 2 hours

Interactive lecture, audiovisuals, case studies
