Case Analysis for Acid-Base and Electrolyte Disturbances

Content Description
The purpose of this session is to offer practicing bedside nurses easy to remember clues when assessing and intervening for patients with acid/base and electrolyte disturbances. A clear understanding of these subtle clues and emergent interventions will promote patient safety and enhance nursing care. Utilizing a case analysis method, this session will focus on the indicators for early intervention, the potential and actual clinical ramifications of altered labs and treatment options, and the latest research regarding abnormal acid/base & electrolyte disturbances.
Key content that will be covered includes: arterial blood gas analysis, acid/base disturbances, lactic acid levels, abnormal electrolytes levels –magnesium, potassium and sodium, emergent interventions for lab abnormalities, as well as clues to identifying age specific conditions, pharmacologic agents and pathophysiologic changes such as trauma, which may alter lab values and their response to treatment. Patient outcomes are enhanced when nurses understand the implications of interventions for abnormal laboratory results.
The target audience for this session includes Medical –Surgical, progressive and critical care bedside nurses, educators and advance practitioners. Participants should have a basic understanding of electrolytes and acid/base normals and bring a desire to prevent complications for their patients by linking emergent interventions for lab abnormalities to pathophysiologic changes as prerequisite knowledge.
