What’s a SWAN? Basic Hemodynamic Monitoring
Julie Miller, RN, BSN, CCRN
President: Paws to Learn

Abstract:
Designed for the new practitioner to ICU.  An introduction to anatomy & physiology, pre-load, afterload, contractility,  and what do all those numbers really mean!  The best way to understand hemodynamic principles is to divide the heart into left and right.  This session will provide an in-depth understanding of CVP and PAWP; SVR and PVR; cardiac output and index; and the correlation between physical assessment findings and hemodynamic monitoring results.  Key content will include: defining preload, afterload and contractility; invasive and non-invasive methods of measurement of preload, afterload and contractility; Stroke volume variation will be included, and simple case studies to correlate material taught with assessment findings.  Participants should bring a desire to enhance their practice.

Objectives:
Define preload, afterload and contractility.
Correlate right heart and left heart assessment to preload and afterload.
Discuss assessment findings for right and left sided heart failure.

Format and Method of Instruction:
90 minutes to 3 hours, expandable to 6 hours with advance information
