Case Studies in Ventilator Management Julie Miller, RN, BSN, CCRN President: Paws to Learn
Abstract: What is the best way to manage the ARDS patient? The trauma patient? The multi-organ dysfunction patient? Sedate or not to sedate? Analgesics or sedatives or both? Paralyze or not? Decisions, decisions. Caring for the ventilated patient requires the practitioner have a broad knowledge base of the best treatment options for the patient. This session will focus on patient management of the ventilated patient. Key content will include: Sedation tips: Dexmedetomidine, Midazolam, Lorazepam, or Propofol and the Ramsey scale to assess level of sedation; use of neuromuscular blocking agents and assessment of levels of paralysis; modes of ventilation that best support individual ventilatory mechanics. Participants should have a basic understanding of ventilator modes and bring a desire to enhance their understanding of managing the mechanically ventilated patient. Objectives: Compare and contrast management of patients requiring sedation. Describe assessment techniques for the pharmacologically paralyzed patient. Choose the best ventilator modes based on patient condition.
