Leaks and Blocks: Cerebral Circulation made EASY
Julie Miller, RN, BSN, CCRN
President: Paws to Learn
Abstract:
Nursing care of the neurology/neurosurgery patient is enhanced when nurses can predict potential complications based on signs and symptoms. This session will focus on the anatomy and physiology of the brain, linking cerebral circulation to function. The target audience includes bedside nurses who shudder at the thought of having to care for a “neuro” patient. Empowering nurses with the knowledge to better assess and intervene for their patients is the goal of this session. Nurses should bring a desire to enhance the care they provide the “neuro” patient as prerequisite knowledge.
Key areas of content that will be addressed include; anterior/posterior cerebral circulation, the lobes of the brain and their functions, identifying the dysfunction based on signs and symptoms, and predicting possible complications based on location of deficit.
Nurses strive to enhance the care they provide all patients.  Understanding the pathophysiology of neurologic injuries empowers nurses to provide the best care.
Objectives:
Associate neurological deficits to the location of brain injury and cerebral circulation.
Discuss possible complications related to brain injury.
Format and Method of Instruction:
An interactive lecture incorporating audiovisuals and hands on activities by the participants will facilitate the learning process.  Case studies will promote critical thinking.
90 minutes
