Julie Miller, RN, BSN, CCRN
President: Paws to Learn

Abstract:
Revolving door patients can be taxing and frustrating for the patient and health care team. Pulmonary patients are often frightened, feel out of control and they seek help at least 16 million times per year!  Staff often feel overwhelmed with the neediness of pulmonary patients constantly seeking help. This session will focus on empowering both the patient and the caregivers! Key content will include: Examining case studies to learn the latest guidelines and recommendations for caring for COPD, Emphysema and Asthma patients; Identifying pulmonary complications associated with auto-immune disorders; Strategies for giving control back to the patient and lessening the victim role; and recommendations for caregivers to empower themselves with knowledge and self care strategies that will leave them feeling whole and ready to continue on with enthusiasm! Nurses need to bring a desire to empower the pulmonary patient and themselves with self-care strategies as prerequisite knowledge.
