Critical Care Puzzlers
Preconference Proposal

Abstract:
A full day designed for nurses who just cannot remember lab values or 12 lead ECG analysis. What artery feeds which wall, and what potential problems should I be watching for? ST-elevation, ST-depression and Q-waves? ABG’s, Electrolytes, Clotting profiles, thyroid function, CBC and differential….what’s up, what’s down, it’s all too much to remember!! The morning session will focus on an in depth review of the coronary circulation, types of myocardial infarctions and assessment clues based on type of MI. The afternoon will be spent analyzing laboratory values using a case study approach.  Key content will include: correlation between coronary artery and the wall of the heart it feeds; identifying which artery is involved based on type of myocardial infarction (MI); identifying which leads of the 12 lead ECG look at which wall of the heart; and identifying potential complications for each type of MI. Clues to anticipating complications associated with abnormal labs will be covered.  ABG’s, CBC, selected electrolytes, clotting profiles, thyroid levels, and other miscellaneous labs of interest will be included.  Participants should bring a desire to better understand the pathophysiology associated with abnormal labs and a desire to enhance their understanding of 12 lead ECG’s and evaluation of the acute MI patient.

Objectives:
Correlate the anatomy of the coronary arteries to the walls of the heart.
Describe potential assessment findings based on type of MI.
Identify which leads of the 12 lead ECG correspond to which wall of the heart.
Discuss lab values that indicate an inflammatory process.
Identify conditions causing abnormal acid/base disturbances.
Discuss implications of an altered complete blood count (CBC).
Discuss the significance of selected abnormal electrolyte levels.

Format and Method of Instruction:
One day format
Interactive lecture, case studies and audiovisuals
