Endocrine Emergencies Julie Miller, RN, BSN, CCRN President: Paws to Learn Abstract: The endocrine system affects every organ in the body. This session will focus on the emergent assessment and interventions needed when the endocrine system runs wild. Understanding the endocrine system pathophysiology, assessment and emergent interventions required for these emergencies will enhance nursing care. Nurses should bring a basic understanding of the endocrine system function as prerequisite knowledge. Key areas of content include: Comparing and contrasting diabetic ketoacidosis (DKA) vs. hyperosmolar hyperglycemic nonketotic syndrome (HHNK), hyperthyroidism and hypothyroidism, problems with antidiuretic hormone Diabetes Insipidus(DI) and syndrome of inappropriate antidiuretic hormone (SIADH), and exploring the endocrine function of the heart and its secretion of atrial & brain natriuretic factor. Objectives: Compare and contrast DKA/HHNK, hypo/hyperthyroidism, and SIADH/DI. Discuss the endocrine function of the heart. Format and Method of Instruction: An interactive lecture incorporating audiovisuals and case studies, which will promote critical thinking.
