What do all those labs REALLY mean? Julie Miller, RN, BSN, CCRN President: Paws to Learn Abstract: A better understanding of laboratory results can enhance the care nurses provide for their patients. This session will focus on the clinical ramifications of abnormal lab values. The presentation will include clues to identifying age specific conditions, pharmacologic agents and trauma, which may alter lab values. Clues to anticipating complications associated with abnormal labs will be covered. ABG’s, BNP, CBC, selected electrolytes, thyroid levels, and other miscellaneous labs of interest will be included. Participants should bring a desire to better understand the pathophysiology associated with abnormal labs. Objectives: Discuss lab values that indicate an inflammatory process. Identify conditions causing abnormal acid/base disturbances. Discuss implications of an altered complete blood count (CBC). Discuss the significance of selected abnormal electrolyte levels. Format and Method of Instruction: 90 minutes, expandable to 3 hours Case study approach with interactive lecture and audiovisuals.
